The compass is as important a tool for the architect as the pencil 🙂
SUN has in most times influenced human settlements. When we for ex. see the valleys in southern Norway, which go in a north-south direction, most settlements have been on the east side of the valley, or even more preferably a valley bend in the NW-SE direction: Here you had the most hours of sunshine per day, and meadows , fields and not least buildings facing southwest.
Rooms in buildings have different functions and thus these should also be placed so that they adapt to the passage of the sun. When you see newly designed residential areas and cottage areas, it unfortunately seems as if planners have lost the ability to use a compass…
